(PRO: C11/1094/23). 2 Fifteen felons on board the Honour mutinied and forced her captain to put them ashore at Vigo. 3 The Jonathan was also a former black slaver which caught fire and sank in Maryland in June 1724 (PRO: C11/1400/2, 2581/8). 4 The Anne was a black slaver between 1717 and 1720. 5 A contingent of convicts from Lincolnshire who were designated to embark on this ship escaped (PRO: C11/260/69). Many were subsequently rounded up and loaded on to another ship where most perished. 6 Captain Jones died of smallpox when his ship reached Falmouth. The convicts aboard were heavily infected with "gaol fever" and thirty-eight of them died before journey's end. (PRO: C11/1223/28). 7 The Sally was seized by the convicts aboard and sailed into the Texel where most of them got ashore to make their way back to England. (See Emigrants in Chains). 8 The Samuel was captured by a Spanish privateer. (PRO: E134/26 Geo.2/Trin.5). 9 When she arrived at Potomac fifty-eight of the seventy-four convicts embarked in London were found to have died. Captain Sargent was indicted in 1744 for offences committed against his passengers but was discharged (PRO: HCA 1/20/5). On her homeward voyage the Forward was taken prize by a Spanish privateer (PRO: C11/2499/9). 10 Captain Bond was also indicted in 1744 for murder and robbery on the high seas, and was also acquitted (PRO: HCA 1/20/5). 11 The Virginia Merchant carrying 109 convicts was captured by the French while on passage to Virginia. (PRO: HCA 15/44). 12 The Plain Dealer was intercepted by the French Zephyre and in the subsequent engagement the convicts fought valiantly before their ship was wrecked on the French coast with the loss of most on board. 13 The Mary appears to have been lost at sea. (Papers in Middlesex Records). 14 One of the convicts, Dorothy Gale, reported that one of the servant women aboard killed another while the ship lay off Annapolis but the report was found to be groundless. 15 But the ship was destroyed by arson off Lundy Island. (HCA1/58, Tyburn Chronicle). 16 The Bella with 51 felons from the Oxford Circuit on board was captured by the French shortly after leaving Bristol. The ship was carried to Spain from where the felons reached Lisbon to create many disturbances. Many were ferried back to England on HMS Wager and in April 1761 put on board the Atlas at Bristol bound for Maryland. 17 George Davie died in QA Co., Md. in Aug 1757. 18 Twenty-eight convicts died on passage. 19 The Atlas from Bristol carrying convicts was taken by a French privateer while on her way to Maryland from Bristol in 1761. 20 The Albion left Bristol on 12 May 1764 but had to put back because of contrary winds. The convicts hatched a scheme to carry the vessel to Spain and got their irons off with the help of a convicted blacksmith. In quelling the ensuing riot two of the felons were wounded. The ship set sail again on 2 June 1764. 21 Bound for Maryland with a cargo of convicts, the Rodney was driven to Antigua and wrecked. The survivors were reduced to eating their shoes to survive. (Gentleman's Magazine for May 1768.) 22 The crew of the Justitia sued for their wages on their return to London the ship's log book is on file. (PRO: HCA 15/58). 23 The crew of the Trimly also sued for payment of their wages: this ship's log book is also on file. (PRO: HCA 16/61/188, 30/184). 24 The log book of the Swift accompanies the crew?s suit for payment of wages. (PRO: HCA 16/63). 25 This ship sailed from London to Baltimore in August 1783 with 143 convicts but they rebelled and many escaped. The ship sailed again in October 1783 and, according to Maryland records, landed 87 convicts in Baltimore on Christmas Eve (See Emigrants in Chains, pp. 153-154, pub. Genealogical Publishing Co., Inc., Baltimore, 1992).
