and was supposedly on the Mayflower.  
Two of Rachel's brothers, Hosea and Jesse were killed by the
Indians in 1792 at Innis Settlement near Frankfort, Ky.  (Their cabins were
side by side for protection).  While shearing sheep, they were attacked;
one was killed outright and the other mortally wounded.  The wounded
man crawled to the cabin, where he gave directions for barricading
and then breathed his last.  The women with their three children prepared
to defend themselves.

    Notes: A member of the Baptist church, she was sober, orderly and
           upright in her conversation and deportment.

3) Joseph Murphy married Julia Haley
           d in Warren Co, IL

4) William Murphy married Nancy Ferguson
           b Feb 16, 1776 in Virginia
           d Mar 4, 1846 Warren Co, IL
           buried Ogden Cem, Monmouth, IL
    Notes: Nancy d Aug 26, 1862, Warren Co, IL.  Children:  Margaret b 1801,
           Elizabeth b Aug 1, 1804, John E. b Oct 16, 1805, Nancy b Dec 21,
1808.

           John Eccles Murphy m Frances Wright Doughty Mar 3, 1827.  He
           moved to Warren Co, KY and later, with his father & family, moved
           to Warren Co, IL.  John and Frances moved to Oregon (the Murphy
           Wagon Train) April 13 to Aug 30, 1852.  John Eccles was a preacher,
           circuit rider and educator.  He died in 1876.  Frances Dec 30, 1891
           Children: Susan, William, Elizabeth, Henderson, James, David,
Preston, Nancy Mary, Sara, Ellen, Emma

5) John Murphy, Jr. married Nancy Lamb

    d April 17, 1831
    Notes: Children: Seth who married Hezakiah Davidson's daughter, Almira;
           Bunyan who married Margaret Whitman;  William who married
           Elizabeth Richardson Roundtree; Heziah who married Bob Deaton,
           + other girls and one who married Max Jamison.  Rachel married
           Alexander Reynolds, a cousin of "Lonesome Charley Reynolds".
           Stern and uncompromising, he was moral to a punctillio and strict
           In the discharge of religious duty.

    Notes:  Jun 24, 1854, her daugher, Elizabeth Hutchinson wrote:  "Mother is
            grieving herself to death about leaving home.  She was failed so
            much that she hardly looks like the same person.  You must write
            to her particularly.  She feels bad because there is nothing written
            to her.  She thinks if she could write she would not treat you
            all so. You know, it makes one feel more like they were
            remembered if
            their name is mentioned".  After Peter's death in 1856, Elizabeth
            wrote: "Mother takes his death very hard and I am afraid She
            will grieve herself to death".  Instead, Rachel learned to read and
            write, took up smoking a clay pipe to pass the time, got herself a
            good horse and an easy saddle, and spent the rest of her life
            riding from (her children's) home to home.
