In support of this I cite the pension deposition of William Ferguson, this in Sept. of 1833, Cumberland Co., Ky., also the fact that Belfield Wood, father of Judah Wood, resided Hawkins Co., Tenn., this along with William Ferguson, see Hawkins Co., Tenn. tax lists. The minister apparently took in part of Hawkins Co., Tenn. in his circuit, but made his returns in Greene Co., Tenn. Hawkins and Greene were adjacent counties in 1791. Dist. 7 is in the SE of Hamilton Co., Tenn., and would appear to be around 10 to 15 miles north of Chattanooga. 1836 Aaron Cox Henry Ferguson. These appear to be Henry Wood Ferguson and the Aaron Cox who resides adjacent to Henry Wood Ferguson in Fentress Co., Tenn., see the foregoing land abstracts of Fentress Co., Tenn. While there was a tax list in land in Hamilton Co., Tenn. this land was apparently abandoned by Henry Wood Ferguson and others when they removed to Fentress Co., Tenn. Sometime in 1836 Henry Wood Ferguson removed to Morgan Co., Mo. with brothers William and Belfield Ferguson, and all have deeds in Morgan Co., Mo. dated the same day of March, 1837. See Morgan Co., Mo. in this book. Hamilton Co., Tenn. Dist. 8 tax list. Dist. 8 is in the extreme SE corner of Hamilton Co., Tenn, and its north border abuts with the south border of Dist. 7. TN-28 There also is a tax list in Hawkins Co., Tenn. where both William Ferguson and Belfield Wood are shown. I had this but it was lost in the tornado and I never bothered retrieving it as I knew that it was there and what it said. The same applies to Hamilton Co., Tenn., Belfield Wood was in a tax list in that county, believe it was 1826. For some reason Belfield Wood does not mention either Hamilton or Hawkins Co's., in his pension deposition, yet we know he was in both of these. The fact that he was early in Tenn. is established by his being on both the bond and marriage proper of his dau. Juda to William Ferguson, but he does not mention being in Tenn. in his pension Deposition at this time. Meigs Co., Tenn. Tax Records. 1858, all 8 Districts, no Ferguson's shown. Act July 25, 1866. State of Tennessee} County of Bradley } On the 21st of August A.D. 1866, before me, a clerk of the County Court of Bradley County, in and for the County and State above-named, personally appeared Mrs. Selina Ferguson a resident of Cleveland, County of Bradley, State of Tennessee, aged 47 years, who being duly sworn according to law, doth on her oath make the following declaration, in order to obtain the benefit of the provision made by the 2d section of the Act of Congress increasing the pensions of widows and orphans, approved July 25, 1866; that she is the widow of Edward Ferguson who was a bugler in Company "C" commanded by Captain John Ously of the Fifth Regiment of Cavalry Kentucky Volunteers, commanded by Colonel Haggard in the war of 1861, and by the reason of his death in the service aforesaid, she has been granted a pension of eight dollars per month in accordance with the certificate, numbered 29172 bearing the date on the 30th of August 1864, and that she is a pensioner of the United States, duly enrolled at the Pension Agency at Knoxville in the State of Tennessee. She further swears that she has the following named children of her deceased husband and herself, under Sixteen years of age, who are now living. That the following are the names, date of birth, and present place of residence, of all of the children of her deceased husband and herself, who are now under sixteen years of age, to wit: Jude Ellen Ferguson was born October 18th 1854, Rachel Duette Ferguson was born July 10th 1856, Edward Hamilton Ferguson was born March 9th 1858. They all live with her in Cleveland, Bradley County Tennessee. (The balance of this has to do with surrendering Pension Certificate 29.172, and appointing J. Caleb Morgan of Cleveland, Tenn. as her agent) Salina makes her mark. Another document dealing with pension claim 29.172 and dated 30 Aug 1864, shows the month, day and year, in which the three younger children, who are named in the foregoing document, become 16 years of age. This document also shows: Issue Certificate for Eight dollars per month, commencing January 15, 1862, and two dollars per month for each of the above named children, commencing 25th day of July, 1866, deducting former payments. P.H. Berkaw, Examiner, Passed June 27 1867. TN-37 The following was garnered from a Davis genealogy done in 1892. I had a copy of this some years ago but lost it in a tornado. I have since managed to replace it. This is about three sons of John Davis and Jemima (Jefferson) Collins, who were John, Thomas and Robert Davis. John Davis was an older brother to Robert Davis. James, a son of John Davis is said in this study to have died in Overton Co., Tenn. while returning home from a visit to Wayne Co., Ky. Little was noted on Thomas Davis, it does state that he was a Rev. War soldier, and apparently was once a resident of Sevier Co., Tenn., the county of residence of Robert and John Davis prior to their entry into Wayne Co., Ky. The study was done in 1892 by C.E.W. Davis, son of Absolom, who was a son of Robert Davis and Avarilla Wood, who is said in this study to have been a dau. of Henry Wood.o it said was a dau. of Henry Wood. Exact dates of birth, marriage and death are given in this study, which makes me believe there was a family bible involved. Under the KY pages in this book you will find this and other data, also see some data relating to this elsewhere among the TN pages of this book. A review of the pension deposition made by Belfield Wood's widow, Nancy (Kidwell) Wood, she married Thomas Milsaps after the death of Belfield in 1836, he died in the early 1850's. In her deposition Nancy states that William and Absolom Davis were related to Belfield Wood, Clinton Co., Ky. given as the place of residence for William, no location given for Absolom Davis. In 1859, Clinton Co., Ky., Thomas Davis makes a deposition on behalf of Belfield's widow Nancy. in this he gives his age as 53, and that his father was a nephew to Belfield Wood, that when he was a child they visited Belfield often, and this would mean they resided in Fentress Co., Tenn. Using 25 years as a generation, and the fact that Thomas Davis was born around 1806, I thought I could make some fairly accurate deductions. The father of Thomas Davis would be born probably around 1780, but we must go back another generation for the relationship, and this would have to have been a sister to Belfield Wood, and she would have had to marry the grandfather of Thomas Davis. Avarilla would seem to fit well in this, and again note that she named a son Belfield. In addition William and Juda (Wood) Ferguson named a son Henry Wood Ferguson, this Juda Wood a dau. of Belfield Wood by his first wife. If Henry Wood was the father of Avarilla it would also figure that he was the father of Belfield Wood, and therefore the naming of Henry Wood Ferguson would be appropriate, this as this Henry Wood would appear to be the grand father of Juda Wood. TN-38 Furthermore in his pension deposition made in 1833, Fentress Co., Tenn. Belfield Wood states that he is 80 years of age, and that he was born in Orange Co., Va. and reared in that county and in Chesterfield Co., Va. As the name Belfield is so very unusual, I look for a Bellfield family in Va., and find one in Chesterfield Co., Va. I suspect that Belfield Woods's mother may have been of this family. Excerpts from a letter by a descendant of John F. Ferguson, son of Andrew J. Ferguson. Letter written by Elijah (Lige) Chastain, he a son of Martha Ferguson, dau. of John Franklin Ferguson, son of Andrew J. Ferguson. See Meigs Co., Tenn. for Allen D. Chastain, et al. John F. Ferguson was the nephew of Champion Ferguson of Meigs Co., Tenn., and also a cousin to Jasper Newton Ferguson. Lige said that he knew exactly where Champ and Jasper lived. As we can show that James Hamilton Ferguson was the father of this Jasper Newton Ferguson, this proves that James Hamilton Ferguson was indeed a brother to Champion, and hence a son of William and Judah (Wood) Ferguson. The dates and place of birth also are proper for this James Hamilton Ferguson being a son of William and Judah, he being born 1802 SC. See 1800 & 1810 SC census reports and the census reports of Cumberland and Clinton Co's., Ky. TN-39
