Infant female 8/12 Ark. In 1850, Scott Co., Ark., Henry Wood is 23, b. Tn., and has a dau. Mary J., age 3., wifes name Julia A., age 20, so Susan must be a second wife. The 1880 & later census reports should clarify this. Land deeds in Logan Co., Ark. show Henry Wood Ferguson Jr. as owning land next to his brother William Leyton Ferguson. We do not see him in that area in 1860 however, so he must have moved. Six mile is about 3 miles north of Chismville, and just north of the Logan Co. line, the Ferguson's resided near Chismville, which until Dec 0f 1870 was in Scott Co., Ark. Damron & dau. Julia boarded a boat at Ozark, Ark. & neither was heard from again. Henry Wilson Damron is in the home of Wm. L. Ferguson his uncle, 1860 Scott Co., Ark. After his father disappeared my grandfather was raised by his uncle, Wm. L. Ferguson. Grandfather referred to his half brother Elijah as Odie or Obie. He was once heard to say, "I wonder what ever happened to my little red headed brother". This was all following a bushwhacking incident in which William Damron was shot, it is said seven times, by a bushwhacker or bushwhackers. This was in the yard of Morrison Cotner, and was a case of mistaken identity apparently, this as they were after Morrison Cotner. Following this incident the Cotner women helped my grandfather yoke up a team of oxen and he drove his father to Ft. Smith, Ark., some 35 miles, where he was placed in the Military Hospital, then in Union hands. He survived but had an impaired arm. The story always refers to they, and reason would dictate that it would be William L. Ferguson and my grandfather who put grandfathers father on a boat at Ozark, Ark., along with grandfathers sister Julia. "They" tried to persuade Julia to stay, but by the time she had acceded to that the boat was moving and when they reached their hand out to her, they just missed and neither she or grandfathers father was ever heard from again. During this period in time more than 100 boats sank on the Ark. River, and only a few of these had passenger manifests. 1860 Sebastian Co., Ark. Washburn Twp. P.O. Breckenridge, 4 Aug 850/822 J. Lewis 24 Tenn. John Lewis Mary (Ferguson) 16 Ark. Nancy Damron, dau. of William Thomas Damron and Mary Jane Ferguson, married one John Lewis, who had married a descendant of Henry Wood Ferguson. This would appear to be that John Lewis. Later census reports would establish this as children of this elder John Lewis were: William Henry Lewis, who became a doctor, John Lewis, who married Nancy Damron, and Tom Lewis, who I don't think married. Tom Lewis is said to have been a bank robber, but was never caught. My grandfather objected to his dau. Nancy marrying John Lewis, this on the basis of a blood relationship. He was said to say, "I love John Lewis like a brother, but this is too much". AR-31 1860 Sebastian Co., Ark. 1082, Bates Twp., P.O. Greenwood, 8 Aug. 904/876 W.W. Ferguson 66 SC William W. Germima? One is of a woman somewhere around 30 years of age, the other is of a boy of about 4 or 5, and on the back of that photo is written, Oscar Ferguson. This may be that Oscar Ferguson. See the 1860 census of Scott Co., Ark., home of William Leyton Ferguson. In that census James is 9 years of age. As Daniel, the first husband of Abigail, was murdered soon after the 1850 Scott Co., Ark. census, it would appear that Abigail was pregnant with James, and as she married William Leyton Ferguson, brother to the murdered Daniel, James was probably a step son to William L., as well as a nephew. Note that Bonny as well as Oscar were born Tex. It would appear that John E. was in Texas in 1900. We can also see that this in the 1900 Logan Co., Ark., home of James W. Ferguson Sr. The following Joseph D. Ferguson also fits as a son of James W., this as he is in the home in the 1900 Logan Co., Ark. census. James W. is not in the home of William L. Ferguson in the 1870 census of Scott Co., Ark., he is old enough to have been on his own however. As Daniel, as well as William Leyton Ferguson was born in Tenn., sons of Henry Wood Ferguson, who was born in SC, this probably accounts for a mix up in the places of birth attributed to James, his father and mother. They are all one generation back of where they should be, James was born in Ark. and not in Tenn. It is also not uncommon to misinterpret the Script M., W., and N. in a census, likewise the letters L., S., T., and sometimes D. The letters J. and I. also cause problems in some script hands. In this particular case I use the data on James in the 1860 Scott Co., Ark. census and the data in the 1900 Logan Co., Ark. census. Also note a James W. in the deeds of Logan Co., Ark., and note this location in proximity to William Leyton Ferguson. AR-43 Bible of William A. Cox William A. Cox a son of Aaron & Sarah Cox. See 1850-1860 Scott Co., Ark., 1840 Taney Co., Mo. At present it appears that Sarah was related to Elizabeth Neil (Davis) Ferguson, wife of Henry Wood Ferguson. It would appear the relationship was through Sarah & not Aaron, this as only the date of death for Aaron is given, however both date of birth and death are given for Sarah Cox. Cox d. 16 Feb 1897 Sarah Ann Elizabeth Cox d. Mar 1917 John (can't read) Cox d. 31 Aug 1869 The foregoing taken from a photostat copy of the family records of William A. Cox. William A., Elizabeth E., and John A. Cox, were children of Aaron and Sarah Cox. These children are found in the home of Elizabeth N. Ferguson in the 1850 and 1860 census of Scott Co., Ark. Aaron Cox is a neighbor to Henry Wood Ferguson in the 1840 census of Taney Co., Mo., and a neighbor to Henry Wood in the Henry Wood Ferguson survey in Fentress Co., Tenn. The fact that both the date of birth and death for Sarah N. Cox is recorded, but only the date of death for Aaron shown, would indicate that Sarah N. was the one who was related to the family of Henry Wood Ferguson. As Henry Wood Ferguson had a proven dau. Juda who was born in 1815, according to her death certificate, and unless Sarah N. was a twin of this Juda, it would preclude anyone b. in Aug. of 1815 to have had a sister born the same year. Therefore it appears more likely that Sarah N. Cox may have been related to Elizabeth Neil Davis, wife of Henry Wood Ferguson. This Elizabeth was born in 1796, so it is conceivable that Sarah N. was a younger sister to this Elizabeth. AR-44 Bible of Malinda (Brock) Duckett, Handed down in the following order. The land was sold in 1838, and in this deed we find the name of the mother of William Damron, her name was Jane, maiden name not given. It is from her that we get the Cherokee Indian, she being one of what is now known in Okla. as the "Old Settlers". The mill operated into the 1900's, but was covered by Lake Fayetteville when that lake was formed. I have a photo of this old mill, taken c1880. One should not confuse a Twp. used for surveying, these all being numbered Twps., with political Twps., which will have names. A political Twp. can also meander, and can contain any number of acres, while a numbered Twp. will always contain 36 sections, each section consisting of 640 acres or slightly less (do to grid lines coming closer together as one goes north). An example is Washburn Twp., which is in present day Logan Co., Ark. Washburn Twp. includes the land found in Twp. 6 N., Range 28 W., but it also contains land in other Ranges and Twps. AR-58 For the purposes here, this being land shown in these Ark. land deeds, Townships are numbered from South to North, starting at a Baseline passing east west just south of Little Rock. Ranges are numbered from East to West, starting from the 5th prime meridian, which is about even with the extreme southeast corner of Ark. To better understand the locations given here I will cite Twp. 6, Range 29. On a map of Ark. look for Hwy 10 between Greenwood, which is in Sebastian Co., and Booneville, which is in Logan Co. Hwy 10 runs through sections 19, 20, 21, 22, 23 & 24 of Twp 6 N., Range 29 W., and at the section line of sections 20 and 21, you will note the junction of Hwy 10 & Hwy 252. Hwy 252 goes south, generally following the section line until it turns toward the southwest in the northwest corner of section 28, and at that point it junctions with what is known as Old Hwy 10. It is at this junction where the old community of Washburn stood, this community not to be confused with the political Twp. of Washburn in Logan Co., Ark. AR-59 West of the 5th prime meridian, Ranges include the letter W., while east of that meridian they include the letter E. Much the same applies to Twps., north of the baseline they will contain the letter N., and south of that baseline the letter S. AR-60 Hempstead Co., Ark. Excerpts from the Washington Press. Washington, Hempstead Co., Ark. Sat. 20 Feb. 1886 The author of this column was John Williams, a grandson of the John Williams who came from Cumberland Co., Ky. to Hempstead Co., Ark. with Elijah Ferguson in 1830. Elijah was a brother to Henry Wood and Ellis Ferguson and a son of William and Judah (Wood) Ferguson, as can be determined by evidence here and elsewhere in these books. These papers embrace an account of an encounter between a brother of the late Elijah Ferguson and a rabid panther, written from the dim recollection of the story as I had heard it many years ago. As I suspected it contained some inaccuracies and I am indebted to A.B. Williams of Washington for a correct version of this account. Corrected Version of the Panther Story. It occurred in 1832-33 in Sevier Co., now Howard Co., at a place called by many the Saline Lick, and by others the Saline Salt Works. The property was owned at that time by a Col. William Hickman, a man of considerable wealth. He came to Hempstead in 1819 or 1820 and subsequently removed to La. Col. Elijah Ferguson came to Hempstead Co. in the year 1830 from the state of Ky. Elijah was employed by Hickman to oversee slaves in the process of manufacturing salt, this from deep wells in the area. At the time of the tragic accident, Ellis Ferguson, a younger brother to Col. Elijah Ferguson, had just arrived in the country from Ky. and was on a visit to the salt works, this having been the first that the brothers had met since the elder brother had left the old home. They had fired the furnaces and gone to the cabin for the night, having much to talk about and relate to each other about the folks at home. This relation had carried them past the normal bedtime and suddenly they were drawn from their pleasant conversation by a negro boy who appeared, the boys task being to watch and keep the mule going at propelling the pumps, which worked night and day. Something at the well had jumped on the mule and was tearing it to pieces. The night was quite dark and they groped their way along as rapidly as they could in the darkness, the younger brother being in advance. Suddenly without a note of warning the infuriated panther Jumped upon Ellis, alighting upon his broad shoulders. To any without undaunted courage and nerves of steel, such an attack would have been sufficient to produce syncope, but not so with the brave and daring young man. AR-61 His first impulse was self defense. He was of stalwart build wit sinews of iron, he grappled with the infuriated beast and there began a struggle for life and death. He grabbed the monster by the throat, at the same time exclaiming to his brother, don't try to shoot, you may hit me, I can manage it. And so by blows, kicks and choking he brought the monster to the ground, and there held it until his brother could get exact position of man and beast, holding a rifle to the panthers head and shooting into its brain. Ellis was not greatly harmed by the beast, suffering a few bites to the head and being clawed some by the panther, but unfortunately the panther was rabid. The mule that it had attacked and other animals that it had bitten, all died of rabies. Ellis recovered from his wounds but some six months or more later was a victim of the rabid panther and died a terrible death from this disease. Ellis is said in this article to have been about 21 at the time this occurred, and was raised in the mountainous regions of Ky., and a tremendously strong man. Considerable adjectives were used concerning his strength and build, but I have condensed this to the basic story. Note: From the 1800 and 1810 census reports of SC, we can determine by sex and relative ages given in these census reports, plus having better information as to dates of birth for other children of William and Judah Ferguson, that Ellis was born in SC, this after the 1807 birth of Elijah, but prior to 1810. Excerpts from the Washington Press. Washington, Hempstead Co., Ark., Sat. 20 Nov 1886. Elijah Ferguson came to Hempstead Co., Ark. from Cumberland Co., Ky. with the family of John W. Williams. He was unmarried and industrious, accumulating considerable wealth before his death. Late in life he turned to the practice of law and was a partner of D.W. Mitchell, father of his son in law. Col. Elijah Ferguson passed away on 13 Feb. 1875, and is buried in the cemetery at Washington. Elijah Ferguson was found in Hempstead Co., Ark. due to information within the family legends of Henry Wood Ferguson. See Hamilton Co., Tenn., Fentress Co., Tenn., Morgan Co., Mo., Taney Co., Mo., Scott & Logan Co., Ark., for Henry Wood Ferguson and family. Data within the legend stated that Elijah, brother to Henry Wood Ferguson, resided in Washington Ark. This also explains why Henry Wood was some 35 miles East of where he should have been if on a route from Taney Co., Mo. to Texas, he had taken an alternate route South of Siloam Springs, Ark., this route passing through Booneville, Ark., which was then in Scott Co., Ark., and continuing on to Washington, Ark. where it met with the Military Road. I think it obvious that Henry Wood Ferguson had taken this detour in order to visit his brother Elijah, intending then to pick up the Military Road and follow it into Texas, but as an ox became ill and liking the area he was in, Henry Wood Ferguson opted to remain in that part of Scott Co. that was cut off into Logan Co., Ark. in 1870. AR-62 There is a great deal of strong circumstantial evidence to show Henry Wood Ferguson to have been a son of William & Judah (Wood) Ferguson, but finding Elijah by information contained within the data in the line of Henry Wood Ferguson, much of this recorded years ago, and as Elijah can be shown to have been a son of William and Judah, proves Henry Wood Ferguson was also a son. See 1880 Logan Co., Ark. census, William L. Ferguson, proven son of Henry Wood Ferguson, census gives SC as birth state of father, see Ark. cemeteries for date of birth of Henry Wood, also see 1800, 1810 SC census. Hempstead Co., Ark. I desire that all my children herein after mentioned, be made equal in the matter of advancement out of my estate, that is to say that those who have had more or less amount, to be made equal with those who have had more. 5th. In estimating advance to my children, I desire that William J. Ferguson be charged with a tract of land that I gave him at the rate of $5.00 per acre. That my dau. Sarah Catherine be charged with a tract of land, again given by me to her husband James Hannegan, at the rate of $4.00 per acre. That my dau. Eliza J. be charged with the sum of $300.00 on account of an advancement made to her husband George W. Sandifur. That my son James Rochester Ferguson be charged with whatever I have paid of building of his house. That John Henderson Ferguson be charged with $700.00. 6th. This only names all the children to share and share alike after the foregoing charges against advancements were made. It does give a middle name not shown in the foregoing items, This William Jett Ferguson. 7th. Names William J. (Jett) Ferguson as sole executor. 8th. Gives the right to sell any land and sign deed for same to his son William J. Ferguson. Asks that he employ Charles E. (error, buried someplace in Polk Co., Ark.) It is of interest that Olda Sanfred Ferguson gives both the date of birth and death for William J. Ferguson, yet he must not have taken these from William J. Ferguson's tombstone for if he had he would have known that Nancy Jane (Brock) Ferguson was not buried at the cemetery at Old Washburn, Ark. All graves in this cemetery are identified, plus Nancy Jane died prior to their arrival in Sebastian Co., Ark. My grandmother, Mary Jane (Ferguson) Damron, a dau. of William J. & Nancy Jane Ferguson, stated that her mother died near Mena, Ark., this shortly after their return into Ark. from Texas. Extracted from (Life in North Howard 1873-1973 - Families) Jeremiah Stewart, born about 1816, and his family were in Sulphur Springs Twp. of Polk Co., Ark. at the time of the 1850 census. A son of Jeremiahs named John, age 7 in 1850, may be the same John Stewart who married Lina Duckett, and reared a family of nine children, all born in Howard Co., Ark. (There are some errors in what is written here, see the 1870 census of Sebastian Co., Ark., where both Jeremiah Stuart/Stewart and his son John are shown. Also look at Garland Co., Ark., also Polk Co., Ark., Sebastian Co., Ark., and White and Habersham Co's., Ga. for Sarah Salina Duckett, Allen Turner Duckett, John Odell Duckett, James E. Sarah Salina Duckett, b. 22 Nov 1844, d. 9 Feb 1917, m. John Stewart, b. 1841, d. 4 Jul 1919, had children through at least China L.J. in Sebastian Co., Ark., and then removed to Howard Co., Ark.; John Odell Duckett m. The article on the Stewart family that is found here is substantially correct as to birth dates for children, so I assume that other data contained in the following is also substantially correct. The children of John Stewart and Lina (Sarah Salina) Duckett, as given in this works, are as follows: Albert Turner Stewart, 27 Jan 1867, d. 15 May 1933, m. Selina Catherine, b. 5 Feb 188?. Nellie I., b. 3 Mar 188? The foregoing data was taken from the Stewart bible on Mar 25, 1981. Said information being written in this bible on 27 Sep 1919. The data shown here was furnished by Mrs. Farrie Wahle Stewart, 5205 Cockrell, Ft. Worth, Tex., 76133; and Mrs. Verba Stewart Nelson, 1400 Spring Creek, Plano, Tex., 75023. These would appear to be two of the names shown, Farrie Wahle Stewart would appear to have been the wife of James Elmer Stewart, 6th child of Albert Turner Stewart. Mrs Verba Stewart Nelson would appear to be Verba Verron Stewart, dau. of James F. Stewart and Martha A. Powell. (I have since come upon the bible in question, see under bible records. L.L.D.) Mr. Doug Cooper, 5610 Escondido St., Corpus Christi, Tx. 78417, is apparently descended from the Stewarts, and he gives the following for children of Jeremiah Stewart Jr. and China L. Duckett. Robert W., born Oct. 1879 Unknown, born c1881. Unknown, born c1884. Relles, born Dec 1886. Rufus, born Jun 1888. Mirthe, born 1890, died before 1900. Clyde, born Jul 1892. Canary May, born May 1894. Myrtle, born c1898, died before 1900. Chiney, born Jan 1900. AR-71 I think it rather obvious that this information came from a census. The Myertle Stewart seen in the foregoing was the Myrtle Stewart born about 1891, Ark., and who married Nathan Ernest Woodruff, see the Mayes Co., Ok. census data. My elder cousins recall this Myrtle Stewart and say her fathers name was Jerry, and that Myrtle lived near them in Ark., which would indicate that she was somewhere around William Thomas Damron in the 1900 Logan Co., Ark. census, although I have not found her in that census. One of these cousins also recalls that the Stewarts married a bunch of brothers and sisters, and that they were related to us, however she could not give any names for these. This all fits however as Sarah Selina Duckett married John Stewart, John O. Duckett married Harriett Stewart, and China L. Duckett married Jeremiah Stewart Jr., these all brothers and sisters. We also know these Duckett's were related to the Ferguson's, being first cousins to my grandmother, Mary Jane (Ferguson) Damron. Logan Co., Ark. Probate record: 9 Dec 1878, probate hearing in the county court dealing with the cost of disposing of the body of Jeff Ferguson. This is the Jeff Ferguson who was murdered by the preacher Smith. My cousins who are in excess of 80 years, all state they were told that this Jeff Ferguson was related but none can tell exactly how this relationship existed. As an addendum to this: In the summer of 1981 I visited with several members of the Cox family, these descendants of William Cox, see him in the home of Elizabeth Ferguson in Scott Co., Ark. These Cox's reside in what is known as Cox Valley, this located in Logan Co., Ark. The older Cox man told the story about Jeff Ferguson exactly as I had heard it through my family traditions. This story was told to him by his grandmother, who was living at the time of this incident, which occurred in 1878. The part of real interest here is that it was near the residence of this Cox where Jeff Ferguson was murdered, and Jeff was taken from his shallow grave and reburied at the site, his grave is marked by a field stone. The deed was done in 1878, and I'm told that Jeff Ferguson was a young well educated man who came to Ark. from Ill. He worked for John Cotner at Chismville, keeping books and such. He entered into an agreement with the preacher Smith to raise some cotton, and to be paid after its sale. Smith never paid and Jeff went to see him, never to return. Smith later came into Chismville to have some grain ground at a gristmill. This mill was owned by John Cotner. Smith was queried as to Jeff Ferguson, saying that Jeff had gone to collect from this Smith but had never returned, which was causing people to wonder. They say that Smith never returned for his meal, which made them wonder even more, causing a search to be made for this Smith. Benton Harris, constable of Driggs Twp., his brother Frank. Owen Jones, and John Cotner, went after him. He was found in a cotton field at what was Shake Rag, Okla., he had disguised himself by shaving his head and some other things. Smith was returned to Ark. and placed in a jail there, where he hung himself. AR-72 Logan Co., Ark. 23 May 1902. Guardianship: Stamped 2 June 1902 by pension office. Note on margin states child of another wife. Subject is Rosa Dammon, b. 20 Sep 1887, child of pensioner Wilson Dammon, Co. I., 2nd Regt., Ark. Cav. Vol., that the soldier was honorably discharged 20 Aug 1865, and that he died on 31 Jan 1902. That W.T. Dammon is the Guardian of Rosa Dammon. (This is of course Henry Wilson Damron, Rosa Damron, and William Thomas Damron. Wlson could not write, and as a result his surname was spelled Dammon in his military records. In dealing with things having to do with Wilson's pension, William Thomas Damron, although quite literate, signed as W.T. Dammon in order for things to agree with that seen in the file of Wilson Damron) Letter of Recomendation for Arch Damron. Booneville, Ark., Aug. 2, 1913 To whom it may concern: "It gives me great pleasure to recommend Mr. Arch Damron as a Public School Teacher." Will say that he adds to a through training in High School Work, and considerable experience as a teacher, in which work he has had marked success. Mr. Damron is a very highly accomplished young man. His personality is pleasing, his actions modest, is an adept in music, and is an excellent mixer. He has won considerable fame in his own and adjoining counties by his work in public entertainment. I feel that any community in need of a good school teacher would make a good selection by procuring his services. Very Respectfully, E.F. Ferguson Arch Damron a son of William Thomas Damron and Mary Jane Ferguson. E.F. Ferguson was Ezra Franklin Ferguson, son of John Wesley Ferguson. At the time this was written Arch was not quite 20 years of age. AR-73 Polk Co., Ark. Sebastian Co., Ark. William J. Ferguson resided near old Washburn, Bates Twp., Sebastian Co., Ark. The present Washburn store is on the south side of Hwy. 10, about half way between Greenwood and Booneville, Ark. The old Washburn Cemetery is about a half mile south of this store, and that is where this William J. Ferguson is buried. In 1895 William J. Ferguson wrote at least two letters to his sister Sarah, both of these letters were postmarked Washburn Ark., and begin with Dear Sister. This proves that William J. Ferguson was a son of Hugh Ferguson and Mary Ann Higgins, as this Sarah is proven as a dau. of these parents. Mrs. Willette Dalton, who lives near Hollingsworth Ga., sent me photo copies of these letters. Willette is the dau. of Clyde Duckett, who is a son of Gresham Duckett, who was a son of Dolphus Duckett and Sarah Ferguson. See the records kept by this Gresham Duckett, these are in considerable detail regarding relationships that relate to Hugh Ferguson and Mary Ann Higgins. These records will be found in my Ga. data. One letter is addressed: Mrs. Sarah Duckett, Hollingsworth, Ga., and it is postmarked Washburn, Ark. Oct. 23rd 1892 Dear Sister, After some delay I will answer your letter. This leaves the connection all well as far as I know, and hope this (finds) you and all the children well. I still keep tolerably stout. I don't work much and am not in debt. Got a horse and buggy and do my own driving. My place keeps me up, and our crops not very good owing to heavy rain in spring, then dry in the summer. All my children made plenty and some to spare. Some of my land made 50 bushels of corn per acre, was more than my neighbors made. I want to see you all mighty bad, if life lasts I think I will. A.H. Cox's eldest daughter was down from Mo. in later part of summer to see us. Jane went to Kansas to see her sister Mary, got back safe, cost only $14.00. Let me hear how you and the children are getting along, and where they are. Health is tolerable good. The people, a good many, in debt and nothing to pay with. My children are all safe as to that part. Politics is up, I guess I will vote for Harrison. I see no show for Wever (Weaver?), or I might vote 3rd party. Now I want you to answer this soon and not neglect as I did your brother. AR-77 Another letter is addressed to: Sarah Duckett, Hollingsworth, Banks Co., Ga. The letter starts: Washburn Ark. May 27-95 Well Dear Sister, I will try and answer your letter I received a few days ago. This leaves all the connection well as far as I know, and hope this will reach you in due time and find all well. I would like to be with you on your birthday the best in the world. I hope you will have a good time. I can't leave at this time as I have got my papers filed at Washington for pension, for pension for helping move the Cherokee Indians from Ga. Which you will recollect me and Jim Higgins and John Higgins, all three went. The act was past July the 27th 1892, pay to commence from the passing of the act at $8.00 per month. Congress amended the act the 19th of last Febuary to $12.00 per month during my natural life. My papers has been in some time and there are no objections raised yet. My attorney gives me good encouragement. We have a cold dry spring, everything late but looks well and not much grass. It is now raining but no money, Uncle Sam is good pay if I can get a debt on him. Please answer this soon, Your brother, Wm. Ferguson. The following was a post script to the foregoing letter. I had liked forget to tell you that J.E. Duckett has got 22 bee stands very rich. They are swarming right away, 2 swarms this morning before 7 o:clock. He can't been out of honey in years. Come and help him eat honey as you are younger than I am. Write as soon as your birthday is past. Two more letters were sent to me from Ga. Both were written at Washburn, Ark., one by William J. Ferguson in answer to a letter written by Gresham Duckett that had informed him of the death of his sister Sarah. The other was a letter written by Nancy Goupie, which informed Gresham of the death of his uncle, William J. Ferguson. These are as follows: Washburn, Ark. Nov 28th 1898 My Dear Grissom Duckett. I received your sad letter today. I was so glad she got to see my picture before she died. I've been expecting to hear of her death or her children every letter. (this letter is very hard to read, many words spelled in error, grammer is not the best, and many words & short phrases written multiple times. You can make out that he states his eldest sister died alone in the woods, that would have to be Nancy, who married Josiah Duckett. He also says his youngest brother died suddenly, although in good health. That would be Hugh Hamilton Ferguson, who died at age 36 in 1864.He goes on to say that he is the last of his brothers and sisters, and to tell all the children they made good crops this year. He then says he can write no more, and will wait for a letter. Then it is signed. Your uncle Wm. Ferguson (Grissom the nickname for Gresham Duckett I'm told by a grand dau.) AR-78 26 March Washburn Ark. Dear cousins I will write you a few lines to let you know your uncle, William Ferguson, departed this life the 8th of this month at 8 in the evening. He passed out peacefully just like going to sleep. He has said for years that he did not suffer any pain and was not sick, and that is a great comfort to us. I can't contribute his death to anything but old age, he was eighty five the 17th of last December. When he went it was the last of grandpa Fergusons first children. (that would of course be Hugh Fergusons children by Mary Ann Higgins) I need not tell you that it was hard to give him up, you know all about such things from your experience, but I hope our loved ones are better off and hope we will all be able to meet them where parting will be no more. I will close by asking you all to write to us. Signed, From your uncle Williams second daughter Nancy L. Goupie The envelope for this letter is postmarked 26 March 1901, Washburn, Ark., and is addressed to Gresham Duckett, Hollingsworth, Ga. In the foregoing letters I have corrected spellings, and added capitol letters and punctuation, however I did little to disturb the grammer. While most of the contents of these letters have nothing to do with genealogy, there are some things that do. First these letters prove beyond any doubt that William J. Ferguson was a son of Hugh Ferguson, this as the Sarah Duckett to which these letters were addressed, was a proven daughter of Hugh Ferguson and Mary Ann Higgins. We also see that William J. Ferguson was active in the removal of the Cherokee from Ga. The two he mentions as being with him may have been related to Mary Ann Higgins, William and Sarahs mother. We also note that he asks his sister Sarah to be prompt in her answer to his letter, not as he was with her brother. I think this shows that a brother to William J. and Sarah was living during the 1890's. We know that John H. and Hugh H. were brothers, but Hugh H. died in 1864, and John H. prior to the 1880 census. In Ga. Military data regarding Indian removal, we see that Champion, Edward, and Andrew J. Ferguson were all active in this. These were uncles to William J. Ferguson. See data under Georgia for this. We see no records that indicate William J. Ferguson was however, although he must have been. Lawson Eastep, a cousin to me, told me that William J. Ferguson procured his land in Sebastian Co., Ark. by way of script given him for Indian Removal. He also said that he thought that William J. Ferguson drew a pension for his part in this. The J.E. Duckett he refers to was James E. Duckett, son of Alfred Hamilton Duckett, who was a brother to Sarah's husband Dolphus Duckett. The Jane Cox he refers to in this letter was Joanne, the eldest child of Alfred Cox and Sarah Ferguson, this Sarah the eldest dau. of William J. Ferguson. Carey Cox was the father of Alfred, and this Carey married Talitha Duckett, who was a sister to Dolphus Duckett. AR-79 In census reports we also note that Joanne Cox was born Texas in 1862, but her brother, Malone Cox, was born in 1864, Ark. This supports grandmother, Mary Jane (Ferguson) Damron's stories, and in these she stated that they left Ga. in the spring of 1861, the Civil War erupting when they were in Miss., that they stayed for a time in Ark. with a relative to her mother. We can determine that this was John Henry Brock, brother to Nancy Jane Brock) Ferguson, and that he resided in Polk Co., Ark. Mary Jane said they then went on to Texas, and that they lived on the Brazos River. See data in Van Zandt and Parker Co., Texas concerning where they were in Texas. On a recent trip to the Logan and Sebastian Co., Ark. areas, I located the land owned by William J. Ferguson. As he is reported to have acquired this land by use of script given him for his part in the Indian Removal Act, this apparently true as in one of the letters written by William J. Ferguson to his sister Sarah Duckett, addressed to her at Hollingsworth, Ga., and postmarked Washburn, Ark., he mentions getting a pension for this service. I have tried to find something concerning this land in Greenwood, Ark., this one of the two county seats of Sebastian Co., Ark., the other being Ft. Smith, however I have found little regarding this land. Sebastian Co., Ark. 11 Aug 1880 Declaration For Original Invalid Pension. Number stamped on margin is 6449. (abstracted) Wilson Dammon attests before J.B. Allen, notary public, that he is 46 years of age, that he resides at Sculeyville, Indian Territory, that he enlisted under the name Wilson Dammon on 20 Oct 1863 as Pvt., Co. I, 2nd Regt., Ark. Vols., commanded Col. Plips, that he was honorably discharged on 28 Aug 1865 at Memphis, Tenn., due to end of war. That he is 5 feet 8 inches tall, of dark complexion with black hair and eyes, that his right arm and right ankle was broken during his military service, disabling him from performing full manual labor. That his post office address is Poteau, Indian Territory. Wilson makes his mark, and Wilson Dammons shown, this written in the same hand as the rest of the document.
