Cherry Walk, S.C., was built by John Croxton, who married Ann Ferguson, the granddaughter of John and Ann Stubbleson Ferguson, in 1780, on land purchased by John in 1680.

Herman, born 1916, is still active in the genealogy of the Fergusons. After graduating from Vanderbilt University (BA 1939, MS 1940) he worked for the Tennessee Department of Conservation where he became the State Geologist in 1951. A year later he entered the commercial world as geologist at USSteel Corporation until his retirement in 1982. Herman has written a book about the early Fergusons of his family, participated in the DNA studies and has a genealogy publishing company, featuring the Mecklenburg County, NC court records.
