This is the account of my attempt to locate the ancestors of my gr-grandparents, John (Wesley) and Mahuldia (Bruce) Furgerson. I have put the “Wesley” in parenthesis because I have found no record in which the middle name has been used; however, one of his sons is recorded in some documents as John Wesley, Jr. leading to the assumption that his middle believed that to be true.
Mahuldia’s maiden surname was “Bruce” according to records on death certificates of her children. She was called “Huldy”.
My name is Joyce Furgerson Wilson, and I am a gr-granddaughter of John and Mahuldia. Their youngest son, Dixon Given was my grandfather. I was born in a house in rural Nortonville, Hopkins County, Ky. That was located on land purchased by John Furgerson in March of 1858. The land on which his house had been built was adjacent to the land owned by my father. The house, however, was not standing in my lifetime. Instead, my grandparents lived in another house that they had built in front of the old homestead.
No pictures are available to my knowledge of John and Mahuldia Bruce. I have included with this article a picture of the family of my grandparents, Dixon Given and Jessie Arbelle (Oates) Furgerson. This picture was taken at their home in Nortonville, Ky and was probably taken about 1910.
My interest in Furgerson family history only became important to me after the deaths of my parents, aunts and uncles, and older cousins who would obviously been able to supply me with a lot of details that I was missing. I quickly found a cousin in Nebo, Ky, Sandra Donaldson., descendant of John Wesley, Jr., and she also put me in touch with another cousin, Rupert Furgerson of Louisville, Ky., a descendant of Robert Alexander, who was hoping to one day publish a book. From that point, I shared my findings with him and supplied most of the information for the book on my line, Dixon Given. The book, published in 1998 is entitled “The Furgerson et ux Bruce Connection” and can be found in many libraries, including the Library of Congress. My search on the internet led me to Nina Cottrell who supplied me with information on James Henry line; Nancy Prevat, whose ancestor was William Joseph, Richard Clark of Josephine’s line, and Dalton Murrah, descended from Nancy Jane. I was able to contact at least one member of each of my Uncle’s and Aunt’s families for verification of information I already had and for additional facts.
With the help of these cousins, census, court, marriage and death records, I have been able to put together a fairly complete record of the descendants of my gr-grandparents, and some of their activities after they arrived in Hopkins County. I have been unable to trace them beyond their arrival in Hopkins County, although census records indicate that both of Mahuldia’s parents were born in Tennessee and that John’s father also was born in Tennessee. The 1860 census indicates that his mother came from Ireland. I believe that they may have come from Lincoln County, Tn because of the proximity of many Bruces and Fergusons living together in Lincoln County. Also because of a Troop family who came to Hopkins County about the same time as the Furgersons and whose lives seemed to be intertwined.
Connection to Troop family
Adding to circumstantial evidence placing the Furgersons in Lincoln County is their involvement with a Troop family who came to Hopkins County about the same time as the Furgersons and whose lives seemed to be intertwined.
In any case, John was named as administrator for the estate of James Troop in 1858 and in the 1860 census one of the Troop children resides in his household. James Troop was married to Seina Blades. That marriage is recorded in Lincoln County.
Five of the Furgerson children were born in Tennessee:

The last two were born in Hopkins County, Ky.

From this we can quickly ascertain that they were in Tennessee through May, 1851 and between then and 1854, when Robert Alexander was born, moved to Hopkins County, Ky. I have been unable to find them in the 1850 census in either Tennessee or Kentucky. They first appear in the Hopkins County census of 1860.
John bought 110 acres of land in 1858, and is listed as a farmer in an article printed in the “Yesterday’s Tuckaways” publication of the Hopkins County Genealogy Society. This article was from a bound photocopy of the Kentucky State Gazetteer and Business Directory for 1876-7.
I have found a document dated June 11, 1856 whereby John Furgerson, as administrator, lists the Inventory and Appraisement of the estate of James M. Troop, deceased. There are other documents pertaining to the death and settlement of the affairs of James M. Troop that bear the name of John Furgerson.
John Furgerson’s Last Will and Testament was signed on March 22, 1899. In it he leaves all of his personal property to the descendants of Josephine, James H., W. J., R. A. and John W. Furgerson. He states “for good and sufficient reason, I have disposed of the real estate I now own, by deed, reserving to myself, a life estate therein.” On the date of the signing of the will, he deeded his real estate to his oldest child, Nancy Jane (Furgerson) Fox, and Dixon Given Furgerson. The 110 acres that he originally bought went to Dixon Given and an adjacent tract of land to Nancy Jane.
The above are the only facts that I have regarding my great-grandparents. There are stories that have circulated among family members that bear telling. One story that has been widely circulated among all of the branches of the family is that Mahuldia was a Native American. There is no documentation for that although some of her children bear marked resemblance to Native Americans. The reason for their coming to Hopkins County has been widely held that John and his brother had a “falling” out, that John changed the spelling of his surname and moved to Hopkins County. The reason for the “falling out” differs – one version is that it was over a woman, the other over different sentiments over the war – Civil War, I presume. We were always told that if you found anybody whose name was spelled FURGERSON they were related, otherwise they were not. This leads me to believe that this spelling of Furgerson was changed from it’s original form – but again, we have no proof of that.
John was somewhat literate – he could sign his name – but in his signature on the deed to the land he spelled his name “Furgeson”
which leads one to believe that he wasn’t quite sure himself how to spell his name.
The only other bit of information that we have that might help identify his past is that his brother’s name was probably William, and he settled in California. Another bit of information that I came across was in a letter written to Nina Cottrell from her aunt, Lala McCullough who had done a lot of research on this family. She believed that Mahuldia was somehow related to an Allan Bruce, and that his son, Tom, lived for awhile in the “Furgerson Compound”. There was a John Allen Bruce,
married to Louisa Coats, who had a son named Thomas and were in Hopkins County at least by 1880. This family is also traced to Lincoln County, TN, adding to the circumstantial evidence that my Furgersons came from Lincoln County.
Mahuldia pre-deceased John, and his children were after him to move in with one of them feeling that it was not safe for him to live alone. The story goes that he had “Dick” (Dixon Given) help him on his horse, road to the house of a widow living on his property whose husband had worked from him and recently died, and without getting off of his horse proposed to her a marriage in order to provide a home for her and her children, and for someone to take care of him. However it happened, he did marry a Nancy Fought in January, 1897. He died in August, 1901. I have found no record of him making any provision for the care of Nancy and her children. Her name is included on the copy of the deed in which his land is deeded to Dixon Given Furgerson.
I should make note of Furgerson School as a part of this tale.
According to an article in the book “The Heritage of Hopkins County, Ky, Volume 1” the Furgerson School was established around 1851, when one acre of land was conveyed by Thomas Morton. Apparently this was on land that John Furgerson bought in 1858. This land was in the middle of a pasture when Dixon Given took ownership of the land, and he deeded to the Hopkins County School Corp. land at the edge of his property, out of the cow pasture, for the relocation of the school. He supplied the lumber for building the new one-room school house. In the 1898 school census, descendants of all of the John Furgerson children were enrolled in the school. There were about 70 children enrolled. Interestingly, in the printed copy of the school census that I have, all of the FURGERSON names were spelled “Ferguson” or “Fergerson”. The author of this piece also attended that school through the 4th grade when her family moved away. The school burned in 1941 and was not rebuilt. Instead they consolidated it with the Nortonville School. Enrollment at the school was quite small by that time.

This is the story as I know it, but it is far from complete. It is my greatest wish to find out who the ancestors were for John and Mahuldia and to trace their lineage. It is my greatest hope that someone reading this brief history will recognize something in it that will help them connect the family to their family in Tennessee – or elsewhere.
