Subject: [Ferguson-L] John Furgerson and Mahuldia Bruce Furgerson My great-grandparents were John Furgerson and Mahuldia Bruce. Do not know if the way he spelled it was correct or whether he may have been a Ferguson. All I know for sure about him is that he was born on January 15, 1814 in Tennessee (according to Hopkins County, Ky Census records) and that his first five children were born in Tennessee -- the first, Nancy Jane Furgerson in 1840 and the 5th, John Wesley in 1851. Sometime between May 15, 1851 and 1854 the family moved to Hopkins County, Ky. In 1854 a 6th child, Robert Alexander Furgerson was born. Their last child, Dickson Given Furgerson, was born in 1858. John (Wesley?) Furgerson married Mahulda, or Huldy, or Mahuldia Bruce. She was also from Tennessee, according to census records. Family tradition says that she was a native American. We know nothing about them before they arrived in Hopkins County. Because of the number and proximity of Bruces and Furgersons listed in the 1840 and 1850 censuses, we believe they may have been from Lincoln, Marshall or Jefferson Counties, with Lincoln seeming to be most likely. There was another family story that had to do with John and a brother having some sort of a falling out over a woman which caused a parting of the ways. Also that they were wagon makers. If anybody has any idea who their ancestors might be from these few clues, I would very much appreciate hearing from you. Joyce Wilson Hello, everyone. I keep hoping to see somebody whose ancestors spelled their name "Furgerson". Of course I don't know for sure how far back my ancestors spelled their name that way -- only know back to my ggrandfather, born in 1815. I have not come across any lines that I can even begin to believe might connect to mine. If anyone is researching Furgersons (or Fergusons, etc) who migrated to Hopkins County, Ky., I have the census records for 1850, 1860 and 1870 that I would be glad to do look-ups in; I also have a record of Hopkins County Marriages 1800-1868 (this is a complete list -- not just Furgersons). Wish I could find someone out there to whom this information would be helpful -- it might lead to some connection to my line. Meanwhile, if I do not contribute anything, it is because it would appear that I do not have anything that anyone so far has been looking for. But I keep hoping! Joyce Descendants of John Wesley , Sr. Furgerson - Oct 23 1998 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- FIRST GENERATION 1. John Wesley , Sr. Furgerson was born on Jan 15 1814 in Tennessee. He died on Aug 1 1901 in Nortonville, Kentucky buried Salem Cemetery. At the time of this writing I have been unable to find anything about John Wesley Furgerson before the family moved to Hopkins County, Ky. At this point I only have to assume that his middle name was Wesley because on various documents his son, John Wesley, is listed as "Jr.". I did not find this middle name on any documents that I viewed, however throughout the years family records have always referred to him as John Wesley. We know that the family was in Hopkins County in 1858 because we find a record of the marriage of Nancy Jane Furgerson to T. Matt Fox on November 24, 1858. According to 1860 census records, his son Robert was born in Kentucky in 1854. On March 30, 1858 he purchased land "on the Waters of Pleasant Run", 110 acres, on Princeton Road. According to the Deed, he purchased this land from Francis M. P. Clark for the sum of $1500.00, "forty-five dollars in hand paid , twelve hundred dollars paid in two notes on A. J. Sisk, the first for six hundred dollars due the 1st day of March 1859, the second for six hundred dollars due the 1st day of March 1860, and the said Ferguson (sic) has executed his notes to Clark for the remainder the first note for one hundred and (?) and 84 due the 1st day of March 1859, the second for one hundred and fifty dollars due the 1st day of March 1860 ...." In the 1860 census the name is spelled "Fergerson", in the 1870 "Furguson", and in 1880 "Furgerson". It is not known for a certainty which of these spellings was the original spelling. Also listed in the 1860 census as living in the household of John and Mahuldia was a Susan Troupe, age 12. In Deed Book 23, Page 247 in the Hopkins County Courthouse is the deed whereby John Furgerson, Administrator of James M. Troop, acting on behalf of " Susan N. Troop, Albert Troop, and Mary O. Troop, heirs of said dececent and Preston Fox, John A. Fox, William L. Fox, William L. Troop and Solomon Blades..." It can be assumed that John Furgerson became the guardian of Susan Troop, or at least took her into his home. Susan was born in Tennessee which leads one to wonder whether the Troops and Furgersons knew each other in Tennessee. Apparently John lived on the land he purchased on Princeton Road until his death. His son, Dickson Given Furgerson, inherited this same parcel of land but it is believed that he did not live in the old "homeplace" but in a new house that he built closer to the road. To sum up, John Wesley Furgerson and Mohulda Bruce were, according to Census records, born in Tennessee, as were their parents. In the 1880 census John's mother is recorded as having been born in Ireland. In any case, they were apparently in Tennessee until after the birth of John Wesley in 1851, and moved to Kentucky before the birth of Robert Alexander in 1854. Mahuldia Bruce was born on Sep 10 1815 in Tennessee. She died on Sep 4 1895 in Nortonville, Kentucky buried Salem Cemetery. John Wesley , Sr. Furgerson and Mahuldia Bruce had the following children: +2 i. Nancy Jane (Nannie) Furgerson. +3 ii. James Henry Furgerson. +4 iii. William Joseph Furgerson. +5 iv. Arline Josephine Furgerson. +6 v. John Wesley , Jr. Furgerson. +7 vi. Robert Alexander Furgerson. +8 vii. Dickson Given Furgerson. James Henry Furgerson was born on Aug 20 1842 in Tennessee. He died on Sep 8 1915. James Furgerson was a brother to Dixon Given Furgerson and was born in Tennessee. He was a farmer. Information taken from 1880 census of Hopkins County, KY. found in the Madisonville library, death records found in Hopkins County Deaths 1911-1920 in Willard Library. He was married to Mary L. (Tichie) Clark on Jan 19 1862 in Home of W. E. Cotton. Mary L. (Tichie) Clark was born on Nov 18 1838 in Virginia. She died on Aug 26 1904. James Henry Furgerson and Mary L. Arline Josephine Furgerson was born in 1848. She died in 1895. I am making the assumption that Josephine Furgerson, mentioned in John Furgerson's will and found to be listed in census records of 1850 and 1860, is the same person as Josephine Mills, listed as a part of the Furgerson household in census of 1870, and as the Arline J. Mills (A. J.) who married Joshua Green Clark. Most of the dates and information about her marriage to Joshua Green Clark come from Richard L. Clark through queries posted in Hopkins County, Ky. ? Mills was born in Tennessee. Arline Josephine Furgerson and ? Mills had the following children: 38 i. Leona Mills was born about 1866. She was married to Joshua Green Clark on Jul 13 1874 in J. She died on Jun 2 1917. 8. Dickson Given Furgerson was born on Nov 7 1858 in Hopkins County, Kentucky. He died on Oct 21 1942 in Hopkins County, Kentucky, Buried New Salem Cem.. Dickson Given Furgerson was born in Hopkins County, KY, son of John Wesley Furgerson and Mahuldia Bruce. He was briefly married to a Mary F. Clark (married in December, 1880, divorced in September of 1881). This was apparently not a "marriage made in heaven" and in the divorce petition Mary charged that Dickson had refused to acknowledge her as his wife and to provide her with support. She asked for and was granted her maiden name. Apparently the marriage was, for all practical purposes, over within about 10 days from its beginning. He married Jessie Arbelle Oates, daughter of William Wallace and Susan (Stanley) Oates on November 26, 1882. They probably lived in Morton's Gap in Hopkins County until the late 1800's. Some of the children were born there. He was deeded property in rural Nortonville by his father in 1899. On the deed is the signature of John and Mrs. Nancy Fought, his wife. Evidently about this time Dixon built a home on the Nortonville property and settled there to raise his family. He was a farmer, there was a coal mine on the property that was sometime mined. There were at least four openings to the mine which was evidently rich in coal. He gave parcels of land to each of his children and some of them settled in the area. During his lifetime he farmed the land, worked the coal mines, and at some point in his career he owned and operated a sawmill. It is believed that he only cut the timber that was on his property, however. In 1910 he gave land for the building of Furgerson School and furnished the wood for it. It is believed that he owned the sawmill at that time. Some time after the death of his wife in January, 1938 he was forced to give up his home. The house in which he and his wife had lived and raised their children burned to the ground sometime around 1939-40. He died on October 21, 1942 in Madisonville, Ky. He was married to Mary F. Clark on Dec 14 1880 in J. K. Clarks, Hopkins County, KY. Mary F. Clark was born about 1862. He was married to Jessie Arbelle Oates on Nov 26 1882. Jessie Arbelle Oates was born on Aug 27 1861 in Hopkins County, Kentucky. She died on Jan 23 1938 in Nortonville, Kentucky buried New Salem Cemetery. Jessie Arbelle Oates was the daughter of William Wallace Oates and Susan Stanley, and a descendant of Major Jesse Oates of Civil War fame. Her grandfather, William Oates, married Elizabeth Earle whose family is traced to John Earle, born 1614 in England and died in 1660 in Virginia, the first of the Earle family to settle in America. The first of the Oates line to be found in America was James Oates who was born in 1647 in North Carolina. He was an attorney, and of enough importance that he had his own coat of arms and a signet ring. All of his important letters, deeds, etc., have this signet ring seal on them. In those days this was the mark of an important personage. Jessie Arbelle Oates was a hard working woman who, as did most of the women of her day, tended the children and the house, cooked for the hired help, worked in the garden, fed the chickens, milked the cows (probably). She was a hard-working woman who was loved and admired by her children. She suffered from a stroke which disabled her in the year or two before her death. Ottoway Furgerson was the son of Dickson Given Furgerson and Jessie Arbelle Oates. He was born on October 1, 1894 in Morton's Gap, Ky. He married Anna Mae Moore, daughter of Ebenezer Valentine Moore and Alice Narcissus (Whitfield) Moore, on February 1, 1915 in Robertson County, Tn. Alice Narcissus was a descendant of William Whitfield I and Elizabeth Goodman, early settlers in Virginia. It is believed that for awhile they lived in Nortonville, KY in property deeded to them by his father, Dickson, and while there owned a grocery store. For a period of time they lived in Bicknell, Indiana where he probably worked in a coal mines. At that time his brother, David, and his family were also living in Bicknell. On July 24, 1927 he was deeded property on Princeton Road in rural Nortonville by his father. He had built a house on this location prior to this, and the family lived there until they relocated to Evansville, In in September, 1941. In the period between the time he owned the grocery store in Nortonville and his move to Evansville, he worked as a farmer, coal miner, and owned a saw mill. It is believed that he bought the sawmill sometime in the early 1920's, and for a time the family moved with him to the various locations where he cut and sold timber. He continued farming, sometimes mining, and working with his sawmill until the effects of the depression and his failing health forced him to leave Nortonville. In Evansville he went to work in a machine shop, Schnacke and Fawcett Mfg. Co., and worked there until the Ship Yard opened in Evansville to build LST's for World War II. He was killed while at work on February 15, 1944 when an electric panel that was being hoisted to a ship fell on top of him, crushing him. He is buried in New Salem Cemetery in Nortonville, Ky. He was 49. His membership was still with the Cross Roads Baptist Church in Nortonville. Although his formal education was limited, he had a brilliant mind particularly in math. He was always able to help his children who had attained a higher level of education than he in their efforts at solving math problems. He was a master at adding numbers in his head and he seldom made a mistake. He was a man of quick temper who forgot an argument the minute it was over. He was devoted to his family, an outgoing personality who never saw a stranger. He was married to Anna Mae Moore (daughter of ) on Feb 1 1915 in Robertson County Tennessee. Anna Mae Moore was born on Apr 7 1894 in White Plains, Kentucky. She died on Jun 15 1982 in Evansville, Indiana. Anna Mae Moore Furgerson devoted her life to her family. After the untimely death of her husband she was forced to enter the work field for the first time at age 49. She became a practical nurse, a skill she had developed through the caring for her family, neighbors and friends. She managed to support herself and her two children who were still at home. She had been reared in a Christian church. During the time the family lived in Nortonville she was an active member of the Cross Roads Baptist Church, where she often played the piano -- a talent she was born with. Although she had never had a music lesson, she was quite adept at playing anything that she had heard at least once. Upon moving to Evansville, she placed her membership with the Bethany Christian Church and was a member there at her death. Ottoway Furgerson and Anna Mae Moore had the following children: +208 i. My FurgersonS (and in some documents the name is spelled several different ways) were in Hopkins County, which at one time was a part of Muhlenberg County if I have my history right. My ggrandfather, John Wesley Furgerson, first appeared in the Hopkins County Census in 1860. I believe they were there in the early 1850's because a child born in the early 1850's was born in Kentucky. Have no clue, other than census records say he was born in Tennessee, where he was before that. He was born in 1815, and so is older than your first known ancestors in the area. I have a fairly complete accounting for all of John Wesley's descendants. If you see anything that interests you, let me know. At least I've found someone whose ancestors spelled, sometimes at least, their name the same as mine. Joyce Lois: I can't help you with your Fergusons but while researching my husband's ancestors I came across this notice from The Boonville Standard dated Friday, July 5, 1895: "Mr. Hilbert Fuller, and Miss Kate Holderman, both of Boonville, were married Sunday night by Rev. John Ferguson at home of bride". Just thought you'd be interested. Joyce
Here is information on my John Furgerson. I believe that his middle name was Wesley. He was born on January 15, 1814 in Tennessee, according to Hopkins County, Ky. Census records. They say that his mother and father were also born in Tennessee except on one census that says his mother was from Ireland. He married Mahulda Bruce, born September 10, 1815, also in Tennessee. John died on August 1, 1901, Mahulda on September 4, 1895, and both are buried in the New Salem Cemetery in Nortonville, Ky. John married a Mrs. Nancy Fought around 1898. I have no other information about her. They had seven children, five boys and two girls. The first five (3 boys, 2 girls) were born in Tennessee, the last two in Hopkins County, Ky. They were in Hopkins County before 1854 when their 6th child was born. Does this give enough information about my John? Joyce In the 1850 Tennessee Census index in Robertson County there is a John W. Ferguson, age 58, Elizabeth, age 58, J. W., age 25, James 21, Mary 15. Says he was from SC and she from NC. Does anyone know anything about these Fergusons? We believe that our John was from Robertson County (his name was spelled Furgerson, at least in his years in Hopkins County, Ky.) and that his middle name was Wesley. The John W. Ferguson, age 58 would not fit his age -- in 1850 he would have been about 35, nor would the J.W., but census ages aren't always correct. Appreciate hearing from anyone with information about this family. I have Tennessee census records up to 1860 for Fergusons. My ggrandparents appeared in the Hopkins County, Ky census then. The Willard Library here in Evansville does have those census records, however, and if you'd like I'll make a note to check them out next time I am there. Joyce I believe that I have posted on this website before but it has been a long time and thought I'd run my information through again in hopes it rings a bell with someone. John Wesley Furgerson, born January 15, 1814 in Tennessee, married Mahuldia Bruce, born September 10, 1815, also in Tennessee. Their first six children were born in Tennessee: Nancy Jane in 1840, James Henry in 1842, William Joseph in 1845, Arline Josephine in 1848 and John Wesley in 1851. Two sons were born in Hopkins County, Ky -- Robert Alexander in 1854 and Dickson Given in 1858. Family stories say they came from somewhere around Nashville, but we have been unable to verify that. Family stories say that either John or his father, probably John, changed the spelling of his last name in a dispute with his brother over the side he took in a war. Don't know which war. His brother's name may have been William. Another story has the dispute being over a woman. Take your pick. But I do believe there was a dispute and the changing of the spelling of the name. Shortly after coming to Kentucky John was named the administrator for the will of a James N. Troop. In the 1860 census of Hopkins County a Susan Troupe, age 12, is listed as living in the household. She was from Tennessee. We wonder whether there might have been some connection between the families and whether they might have known each other in Tennessee. Also it is believed that Mahuldia was somehow related to an Allan Bruce who received a land warrant in Hopkins County. It is believed that he was a Doctor and also served in the Civil War. Family stories have always associated her with having some native American heritage. John must have had some resources for soon after coming to Hopkins County he purchased a large tract of land where he and his family lived. Most, if not all, of his children were given large tracts of this land. The deed indicates that he paid cash for the land. If any of this narrative ring any bells with anyone, I surely would be interested to exchange information. I have fairly complete information on the descendants of John and Mahuldia. Nothing of their ancestors. Thanks for your attention. Joyce Wilson Subject: Re: [Ferguson-L] Lafayette "Fate" Ferguson I am wondering whether there is any chance that your Lafayette "Fate" Ferguson is the same as my Lafayette "Fate" Furgerson relative. The Fate Furgerson in my lineage was born in 1868 and died in 1934 in Madisonville, Ky. He married Mattie Jane Lovan. He was the son of James Henry Furgerson and Mary L. Clark Furgerson. James Henry was the son of John Wesley Furgerson whose name may have originally been spelled Ferguson. If you think there is any chance this is the same family, I'd be delighted to try to pursue it with you further. Joyce (Furgerson) Wilson Subject: Re: [Ferguson-L] Lafayette "Fate" Ferguson Dee: I have looked at the census index for Tennessee for 1850 and wondered whether these might be my Fergusons. That would be my John's father, I believe, and the J.W. could conceivably be my great-grandfather. I need to get to Nashville, I guess, and try to find wills, deeds, etc., that might identify J.W. Have tried marriage license for Tennessee and could not find a John and Mahulda. If you could across any other information about them, I would very much appreciate knowing about it. Thanks. Joyce Date: Fri, 18 Dec 1998 16:54:18 EST Subject: Re: [Ferguson-L] Native American Fergusons OK -- might as well get my story in here. My great-grandmother, Mahuldia Bruce, was supposedly of native american heritage. She married John W. Furgerson. They came to Kentucky from Tennessee but may have been in NC before that. They were both born around 1815-1816. We have no pictures of her, but pictures of her daughters are very characteristic of Indian features and many of my cousins have some of those characteristics. Maybe a whole tribe of Fergusons (Furgusons, Furgersons) married native Americans? Subject: [Ferguson] The Dreaded John . . . . . Earlier I sent information on my John Furgerson (Ferguson) who married Mahuldia Bruce. I indicated that they were both born in Tennessee and moved "to Hopkins County, Ky before 1854. One fact I neglected to include --" "According to the 1860 census record, John's father was born in Tennessee but" his mother was from IRELAND. "Does anyone have any information on Fergusons, especially in Tennessee and" "maybe Lincoln County, who married a lady from Ireland?" Joyce
Subject: Re: [Ferguson] The dreaded John problem "My JOHN FURGERSON (OR Ferguson?) was born, so far as I know, in Tennessee in 1815. He married a Mahuldia Bruce, born about 1814 and also in Tennessee. They were in Hopkins County, Kentucky by 1854. I have been unable to locate them in the 1850 census -- but they are in Hopkins County in the 1860 census." He probably had a brother named William who moved either to Texas or California in the mid-1800s. Their children were: " Nancy Jane Furgerson, b 11/15/1840 in Tennessee" " James Henry Furgerson, b 8/20/1842 in Tennessee" " William Joseph Furgerson, b abt 1845 in Tennessee" " Arline Josephine Furgerson, b abt 1848 in Tennessee" " John Wesley Furgerson, b 5/15/1851 in Tennessee" " Robert Alexander Furgerson, b 2/26/1854 in Kentucky" " Dixon Given Furgerson, b 11/07/1858 in Kentucky" "Circumstantial evidence puts them in Lincoln County, Tennessee before they moved to Kentucky, but I have not been able to document that." Anybody recognize them? Joyce
