We have found Virginia Raney/Ramey
in the 1850 Marion County
Census with the surname
of Remy so that has been added as a
possible spelling of her
surname.

Since there are so many
entries in my Fergusson Family Prayer
Book, the data will be sent
in two parts.
Part ONE
Fergusson FAMILY PRAYER
BOOK
from Elreeta Crain Weathers
One of my treasured possessions
is a Church of England Prayer
Book, published by Alexander
Kincaid, His Majesty's Printer,
Edinburgh, Scotland, in
1772. This prayer book belonged
originally to Sarah Kirk
who married William Fergusson. The first
entry was the birth of their
first child, John born 8 October,
1787, in Westmoreland or
Richmond County, VA. This Prayer Book has
traveled from Westmoreland
County, VA, to Richmond Co., VA, and
then about 1830 to Marion
County, MO. In the Fall of 1859 it was
brought to Fayette County.
TX.. My Fergusson family moved to
Falls County, McLennan County,
Bell County and then to Hamilton
County , TX, where it has
been since 1890.
It is miraculous that the
Prayer Book has survived 225 years
traveling via covered wagon
from Richmond County, VA, to Marion
County, MO, and then to
Fayette County, TX. It has been treasured
by each owner who received
it with the instructions not only to
care for it, but also to
record data. I inherited the Prayer Book
from my mother, Clara Elsie
Fergusson Crain, who received it from
her father, Robert Jeff
Fergusson, who received it from his
father, William Henry Jarius
Fergusson, who received it from his
mother, Virginia V. Raney/Ramey
Fergusson--widow of Robert
Jefferson Fergusson who
was a son of William Kenner Fergusson, who
was a son of William Fergusson
and a step-son of Sarah Kirk
Fergusson, the original
owner.
Births, deaths, marriages
have been written on every blank page in
this Prayer Book. During
the 1850's someone took apart the Prayer
Book and inserted additional
pages and sewed the Prayer Book back
together. The inserted family
pages appear to have been taken
from a larger Bible. Judging
by the location of the border, each
inserted page appears to
be 1/4 of a page from a larger Bible.
This Prayer Book was on
the Schedule of Property of William
Fergusson when he applied
for a Revolutionary War pension 13
April, 1818. William Fergusson
had a unique signature which
appeared both in the Prayer
Book and on his application for the
pension. Both William and
his father were "taylors" (tailors) and
William served in the "Clothier
Department" during the American
Revolution. William first
enlisted in Oct., 1775, for one year
and participated as a private
in the Virginia Line of the
Continental Army in the
Battle of Great Bridge, the first battle
of the American Revolution
fought on Virginia soil. William
enlisted again in 1781 for
a period of 18 months.
Title Page:

The words in parenthesis
are words which Sarah wrote. Both in the
printed words and in the
spelling of Fergusson, the 27th letter of
the alphabet was utilized.
In print the 27th letter appears very
similar to the letter "f."
The last line of the title page appears
to be more like this "Pointed
as they are to be "fung" or faid."
In the cursive format the
top half of the letter resembles an "l"
and the bottom half is similar
to the bottom of a
"g" or "j.:
Written on the back side
of the title page:
"Sarah Kirk was born the
__th day September, in the year of our
Lord 1753. Amen. Sarah Kirk
is my name, Virginia is my Nation,
Westmoreland is my dwelling
place, Christ is my Salvation."
Also on this page, (From
this point on, words in parenthesis will
be my comments--Elreeta
Crain Weathers)
"Polly T. Fergusson is my
name...." (Polly Tahly Fergusson, b. 3
April, 1821 was a daughter
of William Kenner and Elizabeth
Fergusson.)
"April 5th Day, 1787...
... ... ... ... .. .." (not
readable--might be the date
of the marriage of Sarah Kirk and
William Fergusson.)(George
Harrison Sanford King, in his book,
"Marriages of Richmond County,
VA 1668-1853," documented that
William Fergusson married
Sarah Kirk on 2 April, 1787, in Richmond
Co., VA.)
"John Fergusson was born
the 8th Day of October in the year 1787."
"April 5th Day, 1787...
... ..." (Again the remainder of this
entry is not legible.)
"John Fergusson, the son
of Wm. Fergusson... ... ... ... 8 Day of
October, 1787."
"Katurah, the Daughter of
Wm. Fergusson and Sarah his wife was
born the 11th Day of August,
1792."
"Sarah Fergusson Departed
this life the 4th day of April, 1795 in
the 43 year of her age."
"William Kenner the Son
of Wm. Fergusson and Nancy his wife was
born the 7th April, 1797."
"Robert Alexander the son
of Wm. Fergusson and Nancy his wife was
born the 7th Day March,
1799."
"Peggy Shackleford the daughter
of Susannah Richards and Wm.
Shackleford born the 23rd
May, 1798." (We've not been able to find
a link to this family--Elreeta.)
"Polly Griffin the daughter
of Wm. Fergusson and Nancy his wife
was born 13 January, 1801."(Wm.
Fergusson recorded this
birth--same signature as
Pension Application.)
"Polly Griffin Departed
this life on Sunday 2nd September, 1804."
"James Thomas, the Son of
Wm. Fergusson and Nancy his wife was
born the 16th September,
1803."(Wm. Fergusson recorded this
birth.)
"Robert Fergusson, the father
of Wm. Fergusson was born in
Scotland in the year 1720
and came to Virginia 1750 and Departed
this life the 28th September,
1792." (Richmond County Court
records document Robert's
presence there in 1750 and in the
following years. Robert's
will was filed 3 June, 1793, and was
probated 1 May, 1795, in
Lunenberg Parish or Richmond County, VA.)
"Thomas Grifin the Son of
W. Fergusson and Nancy, his wife was
born 5th Day of March in
the year 1806."
"Lauson R. Thomas was born
July the 8th day, in the year 1800...
.... ..."
(Not legible.)
"Nancy Thomas the daughter
of ... ... and Hannah his wife ... ...
.... 11th February, 1776."
(This entry is so dim. Copies of this
page are both enlarged and
darkened are almost impossible to read.
Could this be Nancy, the
second wife of William Fergusson?)
"William K. (Kenner) Fergusson
and Elizabeth his wife was married,
January the 12th, 1818."
(According to King's "Marriages of
Richmond County, VA..."
previously cited, William Kenner Fergusson
married Elizabeth Robertson
on 12 Jan., 1818, in Richmond Co.,
VA.)
"Polly Tahly, the daughter
of Wm. K. Fergusson and Elizabeth his
wife was born October the
3rd day, 1818."
"Elizabeth Brown the daughter
of Wm. K. Fergusson and Elizabeth
his wife was Born the 3
day of April, 1821."
"William Robbinson the sun
of Wm. K. Fergusson and Elizabeth his
wife was Born the 3 day
of December, 1824." (Copied as it was
written.)
"Robert Jefferson the sun
of Wm. K. Fergusson and Elizabeth his
wife was born January the
7 day, 1819." (Copied as it was written.
It appears that Wm. K. Fergusson
and Elizabeth had two sons whom
they named "Robert Jefferson"
and this Robert Jefferson died
early, or the else this
entry is not correct. There will later be
an entry for a "Robert Jefferson"
b. 7 Jan., 1827. 1827 would
appear to be a correct sequence
of births in this list. When my
g.g. grandfather--Robert
Jefferson-- died 8 Sept., 1867, he was 40
years, 8 months, and 1 day
old--therefore, referring to a Robert
Jefferson born in 1827.)
"John Henry the sun of Wm.
K. Fergusson and Elizabeth his wife was
Born September the 9th,
1829-- -- -- and Departed this Life,
September 19, 1835, aged
6 years and 10 days."(Copied as it was
written.)
"Lucy ann the daughter of
Wm. K. Fergusson and Elizabeth his wife

"Richard Henry the sun of
Wm. K. Fergusson and Elizabeth his wife

(Perhaps this lady was Elizabeth

the name of her second daughter
was "Elizabeth Brown.")

Pension Records may be ordered from
National Archives and Records Administration
General Reference Branch (NNRG-P)
7th and Pennsylvania Avenue, NW
Washington, DC 20408
You MUST use Form A852814 to order. A few years ago, we obtained
copies of this form from a genealogy library 64 miles from where
we live. You may also request forms from the NARA site via
e-mail.
The cost for obtaining records is $10 if records are found. When
I ordered the records for another ancestor, not only did I receive
his Revolutionary War Records, but I also received copies of his
Family Bible pages which had been torn from the Family Bible and
sent with his widow's application for a pension in 1840-1841.
Not only do we have the Revolutionary War papers for this William
Fergusson, but we also have the Church of England Prayer Book, in
which William's first wife, Nancy KIRK FERGUSSON began entering
births, deaths, and marriages in 1787. (Every single generation
of my family from William's father Robert through my daughter has
been recorded in the Prayer book. For generations it has been the
responsibility of the keeper of the Prayer Book to record data.)
After Sarah KIRK FERGUSSON'S death William entered data in the
Prayer Book. William had a most distinctive manner of writing
William. His signature on the application for the pension and in
the prayer book are perfect matches. As far as we can
determine--from Account Books for Richmond Co., VA, the will of
his father, Robert Fergusson in 1792, Census records, marriage
records, and William's application for the pension, William lived
all of his life in Richmond County, VA--although there is a
possibility that he was born in Westmoreland County, VA.

William died 29-Dec-1829, Richmond Co., VA Other: American Rev.,
Pvt. from VA. In 1782 William's household included 9 white people
and 20 black people. It appears that his marriage to Sarah Kirk
could have been his second marriage. In 1782 he was listed
immediately after his father in the Lower Precinct of Lunenberg
Parish, Richmond Co., VA. William would have been about 34 when
he married Sarah Kirk. Robert Alexander Fergusson recorded in his
Bible that his father died 29 Nov., 1829. Revolutionary War
Records state that he died 29 Dec., 1829. Wm. participated in
first Revolutionary War battle on VA soil.
Sarah: First owner of FERGUSSON FAMILY PRAYER BOOK. Sarah Kirk
wrote in her Prayer Book," Sarah Kirk is my name, Virginia is my
nation, Westmoreland is my dwelling place, Christ is my
salvation." Bondsman for her wedding was John Kirk (brother or
father) and Witness was Sarah Kirk (mother.).

Sandy,
My Fergussons did stay in VA from 1750 through about 1830 and that
is probably the best place to put them. They were in MO about 30
years and have been in TX since 1860.
Which page are you suggesting that I redo? I am dependent upon my
husband or our daughter for webpage designs. I write many things,
but can't even spell "HMTL" yet. Drive C on my computer has
continous problems and periodically I lose everything. Although
there is supposed to be a lot of room on that drive, there is not
a lot available. My Drive D is much bigger, but we have not been
successful in loading most programs to that drive--hence I do not
have a webpage designing program on my computer.
One of the things on my "to do" list is to send all of the
Fergusson/Ferguson marriages in Hamilton County to you. We have
indexed them from the earliest dating from the last courthouse
fire on 2 Feb., 1886 through Jan., 1951. I have also indexed
funeral home records from 1956, when they began keeping records,
through 1993, and will send data to you from that.
Currently there are scanned copies of my Fergusson marriage
records from Hamilton County on the Hamilton County GenWeb page at
http://www.rootsweb.com/~txhamilt/main.htm
There is Fergusson data (obits, marriage licenses, funeral
notices, pictures) on the Hamilton County GenWeb page under the
Blue Ridge Cemetery. There was also a Jacob Ferguson buried in
the Whittenton Cemetery which is also on line.
A few years ago we were able to copy some of the Hamilton County
census for my Fergussons who were in Hamilton County, but we did
not complete the project. Currently we cannot use the facilities
at the local genealogy library, despite the fact that Ray made the
original motion to establish the library and that he was on the
board for several years. After some other writing projects are
completed, I will type up the census records we have for
Fergussons in Hamilton County.
We are bad guys who 'STEAL' from the genealogy society because (1)
we sponsor the Hamilton County GenWeb page[they think we get paid
big bucks for this volunteer project], (2) we display information
FREE on that page [thereby stealing from the society], (3) we
answer queries and supply any information free from any records we
have in house (of course, we do charge when someone needs a
hardcopy which must be mailed by snailmail), and (4) we have not
given the local genealogy society copies on disk of our all of our
work and then completely erased the data from our hardrives. We
have copied about 5000 funeral records and given the copies plus
printed indices to the genealogy society to sell as an ongoing
fund raising project.
We have provided data in printed form for the genealogy society to
sell copies of marriage records--Vol.1 through 1899; Vol. 2, 1900
through 1924; and Vol. 3. 1925 through 1934. Until the policy was
adopted that anyone who donates a book to be published by the
society must remove all of the data from their harddrive and
before Ray was removed from the board, we had planned a spring
release Vol. 4--marriages from 1935 through 1944. They have told
us that they will never again print another copy of any of our
work, so we believed them. They continue to do pre-publication
sales of Vol. 4 which they do not have. We do have plans for
putting all of the data on line (of course, in a different format
from the printed version).
Whenever Ray has time, I would like to have the Fergusson Family
Bible/Prayer Book pages scanned and put up on Miss Ann's page--but
he will also have to have time to put it on that site. I have
also considered having the Rev. War Pension papers of William
Fergusson put on that website.
