X-Sender: sylvia@cottagesoft.com This is my ggg uncle Thompson Benton, T.B. Ferguson, first appointed Governor of the State of Oklahoma. Anyone connect to this line? Thank you for your time. sylvia@cottagesoft.com OBITUARY: Thompson Benton Ferguson was born 3/17/1857, near Des Moines, Iowa. His parents moved when he was a yr old to Emporia, Kns. His mother died when he was 3 yrs old, after which his father enlisted as a Union soldier in the Civil War and he was brought up by an older sister. Kansas, being a new state educational opportunities were few, and Mr. Ferguson made his way through the Kns State Normal at Emporia by teaching at intervals until he procured money to put him through. When quite a youth he studied for the Ministry and was an earnest student of Bible history which has contributed greatly to his spiritual comfort since the death of his young son, Lt. Trad Ferguson. After a short career as a Methodist minister, he went to Chautauqua cty., Kns where he taught school for nine yrs and where he was married to Elva Shartel, at her home near Sedan, June 9th, 1885. In 1890 he purchased the Sedan Republican which he edited for 2 yrs. During this period of his life, he published his book, "The Jayhawkers," a story of the early history of Kansas. He made the run into Oklahoma staking a claim near Oklahoma City which he later sold and returned to Sedan. In October 1892 following the opening of this country in the spring he came to Watonga and established the Watonga Republican which he edited until his death. The story of his hardships and deprivations he endured during those pioneer days could only have been told of a brave and courageous man. The Watonga Republican, next to his family, was nearest to his heart and all the best and greatest of his life has been given to the state through the pages of this paper. His rise in the political newspaper field, resulting in his appointment to the highest office in the state, 1901 when he was named Governor by President Roosevelt. He served in this office for four yrs and six weeks, a longer term than any other incumbent. Perhaps his intense patriotism and defective eyesight alone kept him from being a volunteer in the Spanish American war. His countrys cause always near to his heart and next to America came his home state whose growth he helped so much to shape. His editorial work, was continued until his departure for the hospital, and his articles about the Men of Oklahoma will take their place as valuable records in the history of Oklahoma. He leaves a wife, one son, two grandchildren, Loomis Benton and Ruth Elva, two sisters, Mrs. Ruth Childers and Mrs. Emaline Butler, nephew, Walter Ferguson, of Snyder, other relatives and a host of friends. Abner was a farmer and highland Scotch. They were Iowa Pioneers and lived in northwestern Iowa about the Storm Lake Massacre. The family moved to Kansas when T.B. Ferguson was about one yr old. The Fergusons lived at Emporia, Kns until 1867, in Labette Cty several yrs and from 1879 until 1892 in Chautaugua Cty. He enlisted as a Union soldier in the Civil War. He was the father of the first appointed Governor of Oklahoma, Thompson Benton "T.B." Ferguson. Thank you for your time. sylvia@cottagesoft.com Judy, See the obit of Thompson Benton, "T.B' Ferguson below. It gives his and his father, Abner Ferguson's history and it lists his survivors. It appears one of Abner's son's was Walter and also one of T.B.'s sons was Walter and he was a prominent business man, banker, brilliant speaker, etc at Tulsa, Oklahoma, this written by his mother, Elva Shartel Ferguson. I also have some accounts on T.B. Ferguson's wife, Elva Shartel listed below. It looks like we are on the same path. First appointed Governor to the State of Oklahoma. T. B. Ferguson's Mansion is maintained by the Historical Society of Watonga, Ok. I have quite extensive info about T.B. Ferguson from the "Watonga Republican" Newspaper, Watonga, Blaine County, Ok., Thursday, 2/17/1921. For a copy of all info, write to same above, or the Historical Society of Watonga, Ok. Hereafter, I will only enter as much as I can on these pages. See some info on his father, Abner Fergusons, page. Excerpt from above: Thompson Benton Ferguson-"Roosevelt, like Diogenes of old, was looking around for an honest man and he mistook Tom Ferguson's red head for a halo." That statement credited to a political enemy when Thompson B Ferguson was appointed territorial Governor of Ok., was accepted by his friends as the suggestion for his title of "Honest Tom." The fact that the application remained with him until the time of his death-that his personal integrity never has been questioned by the people of Oklahoma-supplies an eloquent index to the character of a man who served as the terroritorys chief executive through four years. Quite a notable pioneer in her own right. ________________________________________________________ Elva Shartel, wife of Governor Thompson Benton "T.B" Ferguson.
