Narrative: In the Nelson County Courthouse there is a rare set of Birth
and Death Books that run from 1853 to 1871.  Around 1853 Samuel A.
Ferguson, Sadler, listed the birth of Amro V. Ferguson, probably Anne V.
from later US Census, as 30 Jun.  He is the father and Eliza J., the
mother.  The next entry in the book is also Samuel A. listing the birth
of a slave, Isabella F. born 3 Nov to Jane, a slave, and Samuel A., the
owner.  No year was given for either of these births, probably 1853 as
this is the birth year for Anne V. The, the next recording by Samuel A.
Ferguson is for Samil, born 3 Nov 1858 to he, the Constable, and Eliza
J.  Then he next listed an Edward, born Dec 1860 to the slave, Jane, no
name for father, he is the owner. The only listing in the Register of
Deaths is for a male slave Edgar, 18 mos, mother Jane and Samuel A as
father, not owner!

On 7 Aug 1837 when Samuel Allen was 22, he first married Eliza Jane
BARKSDALE, GG Grandmother, daughter of Hudson BARKSDALE & Sarah (Sally)
WOOD. Born on 6 Apr 1820 in Albemarle County, Virginia.2

Narrative: Last year I found that my great grandfather Norman P. BARTON
spent the last four years  of his life in the Old Soldiers Home in
Richmond, Virginia, 1920 - 1923.  I also  discovered the records for
this home were in the hands of the Library of Virginia. I wrote  and
received 21 pages form his file.  of the photocopies was one small note
the said:

notify
Mrs Jeter SMITH
Waynesboro Va
phone 312

Now Norman P. BARTON was from Ohio, and had no relatives of ancestors in
VIrginia.  However in 1864 while serving in the Confederate Army he meet
and married Sallie Willie Ferguson of Nelson County.  So I figured this
Waynesboro note must be a  Ferguson connection.  I spent 3 days in
Nelson COunty this past summer and then moved on to Rockingham County
early the next morning.  As I was new to the area, i decided to drive
the old highways instead of the Interstate, want to get the feel for
travel form one county to the next.  As you leave Nelson County from the
Rockfish Valley and go over the Blue Ridge Mts., you drop right into
Waynesboro!  I think it took less than an hour to get there, so i
decided to stop at the library.  Once inside, found their History and
Genealogy room, and stared searching for Jester SMITH.  Could not find
anything.  However this room in the Library was filled with lots of
Indexes for VIrginia, so I spent the next 4 hours copying every thing on
Ferguson in the State of Virginia.  All of these photocopies i have
integrated in my Ferguson binder which is now 2 inches thick and full.

As I went through your email and my notes over the weekend I found the following:
1. Jesse B Fergusons county of birth for the Nelson County Court Records
as Augusta (Waynesboro is in Augusta County).
2. 1910 Census Index JB Ferguson age 84 & Nannie A Ferguson age 73
living in Waynesboro.

With all this information pointing to Waynesboro, I wrote to the
Cemetery, 4 funeral homes, and the Library looking for the death and
burial of Jessie B and Nannie A Ferguson.  I should gets some replies in
the next couple of weeks.  If I get the the exact death dates on the two
of them, then I can ask the Library to lookup and mail me a copy of
their obits.  Obits tend to be the 'Goldmine' in genealogy searching.
They sometimes tell a lot about a persons past and who the living and
deceased relative are.

On 22 Oct 1857 when Jessie Bernard was 32, he married Nancy A. (Nannie)
BURNETT, daughter of Richard W. BURNETT & Frances, in Nelson County,
Virginia.14 Born in 1835. Nancy A. (Nannie) died in Waynesboro, Augusta
County, Virginia in 1931; she was 96. Buried in Riverview Cemetery,
Block 121, Lot 7B, Waynesboro, Augusta County, Virginia.

They had the following children:
        22      i.      William Bernard (1860-)

Stories:
I'm now in the 3rd year of searching for my BARTON ancestors and have
accomplished a lot.  But Pueblo still leaves me with lot of unanswered
questions.
My parents meet, married, and I was born in San Francisco.  However, my
birth
certificate had my dad's birth place as Denver, Colorado.  So, after a 3
month
struggle to get a copy of his birth certificate from the State of
Colorado, I decided to
go to Denver and research his family.  I took the train there in early
june of 1997,
spent 6 days in Denver; the Library, Courthouse, and old neighborhoods.
I came away with a lot of information about his father the BARTONs and
his mother
the STUBENRAUCHs.  However, on the last day of my research, I discovered
the
Pueblo connection and had no time left for a visit.  So I came home,
wrote to
Library in Pueblo and got lots of help for the Historical Librarian.

The next summer, I decided to go back to Denver again on the train, this
time with
my wife and a 3 day side trip to Pueblo.  I ended up walking from the
end of the city
limits (2600 Pine) to the Mesa (Library) one day just photographing the
houses my
ancestors lived in.  For early June it was pretty hot, my wife refers to
it as the 'trail
of tears walk' and vows never to return to Pueblo.  As for me, I loved
all the time I
spent there, it wasn't enough!

So, Im coming back again this June, on the train, by myself.  There are
too many
question left unanswered about my BARTON family.  The BARTONs arrived
around the turn of the century, after surviving the Civil War in
Virginia, moving to
Tennessee and then Texas before finally settling in Pueblo.  The
youngest child
was my grandfather who left Pueblo in 1905 and moved to Denver.  He had
a
middle brother Norman A. who went to California and died here in San
Francisco
in the 1920's, his body was sent back to Pueblo and is buried next to
their mother
Sallie Willie BARTON.  Sallie Willie died in 1929 and is buried in Mt
View.  Her
husband Norman P. BARTON went to the Old Soldier's Home in Richmond,
Virginia in 1919 and died there in 1923, and was buried in Hollywood
Cemetery
by the Daughters of the Confederacy.

But its my grandfather's three other siblings that leave me baffled as
to what
happen to them.  The oldest brother Fred BARTON worked for Colorado
Bridge
Company, I lose all trace of him after 1942, the last City Directory
entry.  He would
be 68 at  this time, and could not find him buried in any of the
Cemeteries.  One
sister Pearl BARTON married Lee CONWAY, he died in 1930.  There is no
trace of
Pearl in the City Directories after 1939.  The other sister Annie
(Bessie) Elizabeth
BARTON married a STEPHENSON and they disappear from the City Directories
in
the mid 1930's.

All three families were real close as in some years they are living
either in the
same house or on the same block.  I suspect all three families may have
moved to
a new city together at about the same time.

Now to your offer, here are the names of their children, if you can find
anything in
the school records, it would be of help:

Annabell June BARTON(ca1913-)
Frances E. CONWAY(1915-)
Florence B. CONWAY(1918-)
Fred O. STEPHENSON(1908-)
Clifford A. STEPHENSON(1909-)
Norman S. STEPHENSON(1912-)
Maggie L. STEPHENSON(1915-)

Fred A. married Pemelia S. (Isabelle). Born ca 1895 in Colorado.38

They had one child:
        50      i.      Annabell June (ca1913-)
