Do you know how Abraham Farguson acquired the “tracts of land lying in
Spotsylvania Co. containing about 600 & 12 acres” as mentioned in his Sept
1762 Will?

There is nothing in Crozier’s Spotsylvania County Records nor is a Farguson
(of any spelling) listed in the Spotsylvania Co 1755 list of landowners in
road order reports, which is online.

This is just a scrap of data whether it fits into the family of Abraham, I
don’t know. The name is Farguson .

The King William Co Clerk’s office survived wars without damage but was
destroyed by fire on 17 Jan 1885. Only a few scraps of records survived
and these were compiled into a book by Beverly R. Conolly, named King
William County Records 1702-1806.

Thomas Claiborne hereafter mentioned by these presents (illegible)
containing hath demised, grant, etc. lett unto Richard Howell his heirs
(illegible) whereon Abraham Dunn now liveth land lying on the Pamunkey
River (adjoining) Cohoke Mill, Thomas Claiborne and ROBERT FARGUSON’s line.

Cohoke Mill is still in King William Co – you can find it with Google.

Spotsylvania Tax lists - taken from microfilm (Ferguson is spelled many
different ways)

I only copied the land taxes through1815 (but not years 1795-98, 1800-1802)

William Ferguson is on the PP lists - but never Abraham.

Land tax records bef 1786 are in very poor shape, many pages missing. I

That Mildred (Marshall) Farguson Fortson is the daughter of William
Marshall & Elizabeth Williams, who lived near Guiney in Caroline Co., just
up on the Spotsylvania Co., border comes from a preponderance of data.

Abraham Farguson appointed John Estes one of his Exors, whose wife was Mary
Marshall (30 Mar 1726-12 Jun 1772).

Mildred’s daughter Anne Fortson m Littleton Estes, dtr of her sister Mary.

Mildred’s youngest son Richard Fortson (b 19 Jun 1781) known to have
married his cousin, Catherine “Katy” Durrett (b 26 Feb 1784) whose
grandmother was the above Mary (Marshall) Estes.

Mildred’s daughter Frances Fortson m 19 Jul 1794, John Franklin Durrett,
brother of the above Catherine “Katy” Durrett. Frances & John Franklin had
a daughter Elizabeth Estes Mildred Marshall Durrett b 7 Mar 1804. Frances
died at or very soon after her birth.

Carter Marshall (16 Nov 1770-24 Aug 1823) lived with Mildred Marshall
Farguson/Fortson, son of Capt. John & Margaret Carter Marshall. I haven’t
begun on the connections to the families of Sarah (Marshall) Durrett &
Martha (Marshall) Yates.
